Maths investigation in Year 3!
In Year 3 our Maths topic has been focussing on multiplication and division.
We've worked really hard on our 4 and 8 times tables - we're pros at them now!
Today we brought all our learning together and investigated the relationship between the 2, 4, and 8 times tables.
Our findings were very interesting...
First, we identified all the multiples of 2, 4, and 8 on a 100 square.
We noticed that all the multiples of 8 were also multiples of 2 and 4, but what could this mean?
It needed to be investigated further!
Our findings were:
3 x 2 = 6
To find 2 times the number you double it
To find 2 times the number you double it
3 x 4 = 12 is the same as 3 x 2 x 2 = 12
To find 4 times the number you double it and double it again
3 x 8 = 24 is the same as 3 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 24
To find 8 times the number you double it, double it, and double it again
For example:
|
7 x 2 |
7 x 4 |
7 x 8 |
|
Double it |
Double it again |
Double it again |
7 |
14 |
28 |
56 |
We then decided to take our learning even deeper by thinking about how this could apply to division!
We found that:
24 ÷ 2 = 12
To find the number divided by 2 you halve it
24 ÷ 4 = 6 is the same as 24 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 = 6
To find the number divided by 4 you halve it and halve it again
24 ÷ 8 = 3 is the same as 24 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 ÷ 2 = 3
To find the number divided by 8 you halve it, halve it and halve it again
For example:
|
32 ÷ 2 |
32 ÷ 4 |
32 ÷ 8 |
|
Halve it |
Halve it again |
Halve it again |
32 |
16 |
8 |

It was a really interesting lesson. Every member of the class worked really hard to notice patterns and test their ideas. Well done Year 3!
