Years 5 & 6 Experience a WWI Simulator!

Image
Years 5 and 6 have had the best day today remembering those fallen in WWI and learning all about the importance of aviation within The Great War. The Aviation Heritage Trust were kind enough to let the children fly their WWI simulator, which transported them into a virtual flying world - they absolutely loved it! "I definitely want to be a pilot when I grow up now!" Luca, Year 6 They spent the rest of the day working hard to create thoughtful, poignant poems to commemorate those who lost their lives in WWI. They wrote their poems on biodegradable paper made from the seeds of poppies, forget-me-nots and cornflowers - the flowers of remembrance for Britain, Germany and France respectively. These will then be flown over the battlefields of France next year so that their poems of remembrance grow into flowers, which will be so special!  " I'm really proud of the poem I wrote. I think it's the best poem that I've ever written!" Josh, Year 6 We are so proud of

Types of Filtration Year 5

Image
In year 5 we conducted an experiment to investigate different types of filtration and year 5 successfully attempted to create a paper filter to separate sand from water, for our conclusion we discussed the results and spoke about our next lesson based on irreversible and reversible changes.  " I now know how I can create a filter to separate certain materials!" - Sanjay Vincent

A Spectacular Sports Day at St Pius X!

Image
The children across the school had a brilliant day yesterday and we know that it was the highlight of the year for many! After preparing in their PE lessons, the children were ready to compete in their houses to earn points collectively for Sports Day.   It was amazing to see the children demonstrating reciprocity throughout the day by supporting each other and resilience when they were faced with a challenge! We were also very lucky that the sunshine came out for us all day! Overall, the children had an incredible day and should be so proud of everything that they achieved. A special congratulations to St  George who came first overall and to the sprint race winners! "I enjoyed the tug of war; I almost lost my voice! The racing was really fun and even though I lost, I still tried my best." Costa, Year 4 "I liked watching the relay race, as it was really fun watching St Andrew make a huge comeback that led to them winning!" Darcie, Year 6 "I really enjoyed watc

Reception at Forest School

Image
This term we are really lucky to be having Forest School sessions in our wildlife area. The children enjoy some extended time in the outdoor environment learning skills and exploring.  The children have enjoyed bug hunting, climbing trees, exploring underneath logs, classifying plants and insects and using a saw to make some sustainable crafts! All of this and we've only had 2 sessions so far.  We are really enjoying the outdoor learning and showing their resourcefulness when using different types of equipment. The work together well to move large objects as they build their reciprocity skills.

Year 4 - Hinduism

Image
Year 4 have been learning about another religion - Hinduism. Lots of Year 4 knew and shared interesting facts about Hinduism; it was super to have a respectful discussion about what others believe in. Hinduism is a particularly old religion, but does have some similarities with other religions such as Islam and Christianity. Year 4 also tried writing using the language called 'Sanskrit.' In 'Sanskrit'  the word 'mandala ' translates as circle; a symbolic diagram. Great work Year 4!

Year 3 Explore Friction

Image
Our IPC topic (Feel the Force) has been all about forces. As part of that, we've been exploring the effect friction has on the world. So Year 3 created an investigation to explore how the texture of material impact friction. We discovered that smoother material deceased friction and this made our car slide down the ramp quicker. On the other hand, rougher materials had the opposite effect. We look forward to exploring air and water resistance next! "I think that the no fabric will make it go quickest because it smoother." Joseph "Friction is when you rub your hands together and they get hot." Aurora.

EYFS visit Blessed Sacrament

Image
We were lucky to visit Blessed Sacrament church this morning for a tour with Father Paul and his wife Claire. On the way we stopped off at the park which was a little added treat for us all. When we arrived at church the children were split into groups and taken around to see what things were there and what they were for. We were shown the pews, the font, the alter, the vestry, the different robes worn by Father Paul, the different candles and what they represent. ' It was good - it was nice to see Father Paul!' - Amayah 'It was so fun, I learnt all about the candles!' - Reuben The children showed Reflectiveness as they walked around the church. The children walked sensibly to and from the church remembering our road safety tips we had learnt previously. Thank you to all the parents who came with us to help get us there and back safely and assist within the church. It was very hot, but the children did a great job with the walk!

Year 3 Trip

Image
Year 3 had a brilliant day out at Five Avenue Park and Springfield Hall Park on Friday. We did a range of activities to support our Plant it! topic. First, we conducted some research to find out what plants were in the park, checking the names against a plants encyclopedia. We realised that different plants from the school grew there because it was a different environment. After, the class went on a scavenger hunt along the river to find human and physical features. In the afternoon we enjoyed drawing the plant life around us, focusing on the details of the plant. "I really enjoyed drawing outside. I think Van Gough would be proud." - Ivy "I loved it all, but my favourite was art in the park." Liah

Year 6 have had such a wonderful first day at Bawdsey Manor. They showed resilience and determination in all their activities and reciprocity by supporting each other, encouraging one another and working as a team. They have represented St Pius brilliantly! We are so proud of them already!

Year 6 Girls' Football Team Win Again!

Image
The Year 6 girls' football team have been on fire this season, winning both games that they have played so far! This week, they played against St Anne's Preparatory School at scored an amazing 13 goals! After showing resilience and reciprocity, the final score was 13-0, something they should be incredibly proud of. We were most proud at the brilliant sportsmanship they showed throughout the game. They were humble winners and cheered on the other side when they performed well - definitely demonstrating our school values of kindness and integrity. Well done, girls!

History week in Year 2!

Image
For History week, year 2 have been delving into and learning about The Great Fire of London. We've looked at how artefacts, stories and pictures help us to understand the past. The class showed great reciprocity, working together to explore the work of David Best. We also looked at Samuel Pepys and made some brilliant fact files about his life! I love History and have been really enjoying reading about The Great Fire of London - Harrison

National Fieldwork week in EYFS

Image
In Reception we have marked National Fieldwork week by creating our own maps of our outdoor area. The children worked hard exploring a range of maps.  We looked at a world map, road maps, zoo maps, train maps and treasure maps. The children were pleased to be able to recall the 7 continents which we learned during our Wonderful World topic.  We looked in detail at the keys and symbols on maps and how they are used to help people identify landmarks.  They then made their own maps of our playground, thinking carefully about where things are in relation to one another, what a good symbol for them would be and what size they are.  Can you tell which features of our playground the children have chosen?  Reuben     Bow        Amelia - Grace Great job Reception!
