Performance Poetry in Year 1

The more children can play among the waves, the rhythms, the rhymes and the music inherent in spoken language, the more they are developing memory.

Steven Fry – Fry’s English Delights Radio 4

Over the past term, Year 1 have been working hard to learn and recite a range of poems by heart.

Learning poetry helps children to develop an ear for language and Year 1 certainly have proven that they have the ears! They have learnt each poem by heart with actions and have really enjoyed expanding their vocabulary, identifying rhymes and working together as a class to perform.

We have learnt almost 10 poems this term but we wanted to share our top 3 poems as decided by the class:

Chop Chop
Pointy Hat/A little old lady
Wise Old Owl
