Meteorologists in Reception
We are learning all about the weather this week in Reception!
We have looked at the user of symbols instead of words and identified what some weather symbols mean.
We also enjoyed keeping a weather diary each day. We went outside and recorded the weather at the same time of day each day. We have recorded a mix of weather from sunny spells to rain downpours. The children used the correct symbols to display these on their weather diary.
We have also conducted an experiment which has lasted the whole week! The children have used their observing over time skills in science to observe how much rain has fallen this week.
On Monday we placed an empty container outside in our garden. The children agreed we needed to tie it to the fence as our weather diaries had shown it was very windy on Monday. We then checked back during our outdoor learning each day to see how much rain had been gathered.
We discovered that it rained the most at the beginning of the week, and not much towards the end of the week. We also noticed that by the end of the week the rain from the Tuesday had reduced - this led to some interesting conversations about where it had gone.
'The rain, there's some in the jug.' - Kiara
'I think it's dried up now.' - Leona
The children were amazed by how much rain water we had collected over the week. We agreed to use this to help water our plants.
Alongside this, we have also been watching different weather forecasts and wanted to have a go at creating our own to develop our speaking and confidence. The children used symbols to have a go at making their own recorded forecasts. We think they did a brilliant job!
