Problem Solving and Practical Maths in Year 2

Year 2 have been consolidating their understanding of money. We started with some interesting discussions about why we use money, how money and trading has changed over time, how currency differs around the world and how technology is used.

This week we had a shop (including a florist!) and the children had to spend exactly £1 by adding their purchases up. This involved using skills such as counting in 2s, 5s and 10s as well as subtracting from 100. It was a fun, practical way to put their skills into action.

We have also revised our arithmetic skills by using the digits 0-9 to make different totals. This included odd and even numbers, number bonds and using mathematical vocabulary such as 'greatest' and 'total.' Problem solving skills involved finding more than one possibility and trial and improvement. Well done Year 2 for applying your resourcefulness and resilience!
