Confident conversationalists in Reception!
In Reception, one of our main focuses over the year is developing our children's language and confidence skills. We endeavour to provide a wide range of opportunities for back and forth conversations with pupils, building on what they have said and encouraging them to extend conversations through asking questions. This is through informal conversations and through planning speaking and listening activities.
This week, we have done this through discussing our families as part of our 'All about me' topic. The children have shown pride and our school learning power of resilience when standing in front of their peers to talk about their families. They used photos from home to start them off as they introduced their loved ones to their friends. We encouraged them to add extra details and also encouraged their 'auidience' to ask them questions.
Here are some of the things they shared:
'I have two grandmas and two grandads. I have a big sister in my family.' - Ayn Ann
'I have a big family, my mum and my dad live in my house and some of my family come to see us.' - Coby
'This is me when I was smaller - I have got bigger. In this picture we went to see the animals together.' - Theodor
'This is my family, we were on holiday together and while we were there my Aunty got married. I have fun memories with my family.' - Arthur
'I have a big brother - he is 6!' - Cassie
'This photo is from when I turned 4 years old. My baby lives in the house with me and I my Nan and Grandad came to see me.' - Olive
The children who acted as the audience showed brilliant listening skills and asked some interesting questions such as 'Where were you then? 'Who is in the picture?'
We'd like to thank all our families for sharing their photos to aid this discussion. Well done Reception, we are really proud of you!
