Service Week in Year 1

This week was service week at our school and we have been reflecting on our school value of service. We were able to link this to our learning in many ways!

In English, Year 1 is reading 'Kindness is my Superpower', a story about the power of random acts of kindness. Students made their own 'kindness superheroes' earlier in the week, and discussed some random acts of kindness that their superhero would do. Then, students brainstormed different acts of kindness they could do as a class. Some ideas included leaving kind notes hidden in the school, picking up litter, and making thank you cards to people in our community. We took a class vote, and making thank you cards won!

Students further linked this to their current IPC unit of 'A Day in the Life Of', as we have been learning about different jobs in our community. Students decided to make cards for the staff members at our school, as we had previously learned that there are many important jobs within our school!

After making the thank you cards, it was time to deliver them! Students enjoyed seeing St Pius staff members light up when they received their cards.

"Service is about doing things for other people out of the kindness of your heart" - Abel

"Service is doing something kind for someone else, without an adult having to tell you to" - Gianni

Finally, Year 1 students reflected on their act of service. In our Religious Education unit, we are learning about Baptism, and how through this sacrament, we now belong to God's family. Students discussed the term 'belonging' and how it makes us feel.

"Doing an act of service for someone can make them feel like they belong" - Eva

"We are all part of God's family, and everyone should be treated with kindness" - Qmari

Great work, Year 1!
