Safer Internet Day 2025

Today marks Safer Internet Day 2025, an annual event dedicated to promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology, especially among children and young people. This year's theme is "Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online." This week, each year group has been learning about a different aspect of internet safety.

In our increasingly digital world, online scams have become more sophisticated, targeting users across various platforms. Young people are not exempt; they often encounter scams in the form of fake giveaways, fraudulent ads, and deceptive messages on social media and gaming platforms. Recognising and responding appropriately to these threats is crucial for maintaining online safety.

Common Online Scams to Watch Out For:

Phishing Emails and Messages: These appear to be from legitimate sources, such as banks or online services, asking for personal information or prompting you to click on malicious links.

Fake Giveaways and Contests: Scammers often promote false giveaways, especially on social media, to collect personal data or trick users into sharing malicious content.

In-Game Item Scams: Within online games, fraudsters may offer rare items or currency at discounted rates, only to take your money or account information without delivering the promised goods.

Social Media Scams: Be cautious of unsolicited messages claiming you've won a prize or need to verify your account; these are often attempts to steal your personal information.

Tips to Stay Safe Online:

Verify Sources: Always check the authenticity of messages, emails, or offers before engaging. Look for official verification marks on social media profiles and scrutinize email addresses for inconsistencies.

Think Before You Click: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.

Protect Personal Information: Never share sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details, through unsecured channels.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords: Employ complex passwords and consider using a reputable password manager to keep track of them.

Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest scam tactics and educate yourself on how to handle them.
