Year One - Safer Internet Day

For Safer Internet Day in Year One, students began by listening to the story 'Digiduck and the Magic Castle'. The story can be found here. In the story, Digiduck goes on an exciting adventure to a magical castle in a mobile game. While exploring, he learns important lessons about staying safe online and making good choices with technology. After the story, students discussed the mistakes Digiduck made and what he could do differently next time.

"Digiduck should not try and guess his parents' password. He should ask for permission from his parents if he is allowed to use it." - Qmari

"Digiduck should not have shared his password with his friends. Only you and your trusted adults should know your passwords" - Eva

"Digiduck should not click on pop-ups. They can be scams." - Gianni

After this, we had a short lesson on keeping safe on the internet. We discussed games we play on devices.

Popular games included;

  •  Roblux
  • Minecraft
  • Amoung Us

Sometimes in these games, there are options to chat with other characters. We discussed how anyone in the world can play these games, and how we should not in any circumstance give out personal information. After this discussion, students completed an activity where they sorted pictures into 'safe to share' and 'not safe to share' categories. This activity prompted a lot of insightful discussions regarding staying safe on the internet!

"You should never tell someone the school you go to" - Arsha

"You should not talk to strangers" - Ruby

"You should not share your passwords, even if they are your friend." - Ikemba

"You should not tell someone your address or even the park that you go to after school" - Isla

"You should not tell someone your first name or your surname" - Hannah

"If something pops up on your screen, you should tell an adult and ask for help" - Uriah

"Don't tell someone how old you are" - Cairo

"Do not give your password to someone, even if they promise to give you something!" - Ivy

"Don't tell someone your birthday. They could use it to try and guess your password!" - Mia

To conclude our learning, students decided to make posters promoting staying safe on the internet to other students in our school!

Great work, Year One!
