Year 1 - Science Week Activities!

 This week at school was Science Week. Year One students were tasked with designing a poster to promote different things we can do to improve air quality at school!

We began with a lesson on air pollution. We learned that humans can have a negative impact on our environment by things such as driving cars with fossil fuels.

Some of our ideas to improve air quality at the school included;

- planting trees

- walking or riding bikes to school

- turning off the lights in our classroom when we don't need them

- turning off our screen when we don't need it

- keeping windows in the classroom open when it is warmer

We linked our learning to our current IPC topic 'Green Fingers'. Students decided they wanted to make posters about planting more trees as they have been learning about the different types of trees (evergreen and deciduous) and the benefit of them (they produce oxygen). Students used different colour tissue paper or paint to represent a deciduous tree in different seasons (autumn, summer, or spring). We linked this to our cress seeds we planted a couple lessons prior and how plants help to produce oxygen and improve our air quality!

"I made a deciduous tree in spring. The leaves are green and the flowers are beginning to bloom" - Hannah

"Trees give us oxygen. We need oxygen to survive" - Ivy

"Trees take carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. They help make the air safer" - Leona

"I made a blossom tree. The flowers are starting to bloom because it rains a lot in the spring" - Chaarvi

"I made a deciduous tree in autumn. The leaves on deciduous trees turn yellow, orange, and brown and fall off in autumn. In winter the trees will be bare" - Qmari

"Trees help to keep us healthy. They make the air safe" - Isla

"Sometimes you need to cut trees down, to make things like paper. But if we don't have enough trees then we can't turn the bad pollutants like carbon dioxide into oxygen. If you cut a tree down, you should plant a new one" - Eva

"I walk to school. The gas in cars (fossil fuel) is bad for us and can make us sick" - David

"If the air quality is bad, we can get sick. The weather app can tell us how the air quality is" - Alfie
