Year One and Mini Vinnies' Local Trip to Admirals Reach!
Yesterday, Year One students and the Mini Vinnies (along with the school's pilgrims of hope bear) headed to Admirals Reach care home for a friendly visit.
For our Pilgrims of Hope project, Year One students decided they would like to visit elderly people in the hopes of spreading some cheer and making them feel less lonely. The students worked hard in preparation for their visit by practicing their hymns everyday and brainstorming questions they could ask their new friends. We linked this to our school value of kindness.
"Everyone should have a friend to talk to. It doesn't matter how old or young you are. You can be friends with everyone!" - Eva
"We could ask them what they used to do for work!" - Jorel
"The hymn 'Peace Like a River' is all about spreading peace and kindness, just like what we did here today!" - Qmari
When we arrived, the students sang "My Lighthouse" and "Peace Like a River" with the song actions. Some of the residents from Admirals Reach joined in with us as well! Afterwards, the Mini Vinnies sang a couple of their own hymns, accapella style! They sang Rise and Shine and If I Were a Butterfly. This is part of the Mini Vinnie's vision of showing acts of kindness in the community. Then, the students had the opportunity to share their English books with the residents and talk about what they've been learning in school. Students were timid at first, however, as the time progressed, the conversations were flowing naturally!
Students were praised by Admirals Reach staff and residents on how polite and respectful they were during their visit. These students should be very proud of themselves for spreading kindness and cheer in our community. We can't wait to visit again soon!
