Creative Arts Week in Year One!

For Creative Arts Week, Year One students used a range of different materials and art techniques to make their own rainforest birds!

In English, we have been reading the story The Great Kapok Tree. You can find a link to the story here. The story portrays different animals that live in a rainforest trying to spread the message that the Earth is a sacred place, home to many species, that needs to be taken care of by humans. We connected this to our learning about habitats in our IPC unit 'Earth Our Home' and discussed how all living things depend on one another!

For their art piece, students were told to take off their shoe and trace their foot to make the macaw's body (this earned a lot of laughs!). Then, they used watercolour paints to make a pattern on the macaw's body. Afterwards, students used a black marker to make the beak and feet and feathers to make the tail. They used googly eyes and construction paper to add the finishing touches to their rainforest birds!

"Birds live in trees. Trees are their habitat. If humans cut down the trees, the birds would have nowhere to live" - Eva

"Macaws have colourful bodies and multi-coloured tails" - Ava-Grace

"It is very hot in rainforests" - Ruby

"Birds eat insects" - Aibel

"If humans cut down the trees, birds would fly away and carnivores like jaguars wouldn't have any food to eat" - Hannah

"Macaws are omnivores. They eat plants and animals" - Qmari

"The bird has pointy claws so it can sit on the branch of the tree" - Ivy

"Macaws eat fruit, nuts and insects. That means they are omnivores because they eat plants and animals" - Benjamin

Amazing work, Year One!
