Jewish Living Experience for Year 5

Last week, Year 5 were lucky enough to visit the Jewish Living experience held at St John Payne.

This the the biggest collection of Jewish artefacts across the UK. This immersive experience allowed pupils to explore another religion and way of life.

We had a questions and answer session with a Rabbi and other senior members of the Jewish community where the children could ask questions about the religion.  They had some interesting question such as 'Is it hard to eat kosher foods when out and about?' The Rabbi responded that there are Jewish restaurants available.

'We got to learn so much more than we knew before' - Jack

'We learned all about how the Jewish people pray before they eat.' - Kachi

We then spent a few minutes at each station exploring themes such as Shabbat, foods, traditional dress, weddings, festivals and so on.  The children particuarly enjoyed trying to blow the rams horn which is used at Jewish new year. The children were all fully engaged and learned a lot from the session.

'The Rams horn is blown at Jewish new year which is called Rosh Hashana' - Ella

'The star of David is displayed at weddings.' - Dom

'Some orthadox Jews wear wigs in public to stay modest.'

We finished off our time with the Rabbi teaching the children a shabbat song called 'Shabbat Shalom'. It was a fantastic morning and the children were brilliant ambassadors for our school.
