‘Fizz! Pop! Bang!

 'Fizz! Pop! Bang!'

Yesterday, some of our students from Year 4 and Year 5 enjoyed a Science Enrichment Day at Chelmsford County High School.

Their day started with a Physics lesson where they worked in groups with other schools to design, make a rollercoaster and then present it to the class.  All of the groups were successful in testing the rollercoaster with a marble!! Many skills were used in this task, particularly problem solving.

Next, was lunch which was provided by CCHS and then it was off to Biology to look at, 'why we need microscopes to see living cells.' The children were very excited to be able to use microscopes and look at some living cells on the slides, which were otherwise invisible to the naked eye!

The day finished with a chemistry lesson.  Goggles were a necessity in this lesson as we were learning how to use a bunsen burner.  We then used different chemicals on a taper stick which we held over the flame and were amazed to see that each chemical produced a different, brilliant colour.  It didn't finish there, we then did a second experiment which involved testing different solutions to see if they were acid or alkaline, which are the chemical opposites of each other. We dropped universal indicator into each of the solutions to see what colour was produced and then checked it against the chart to discover whether it was an acid or alkaline.

The children were complimented on their brilliant behaviour and their enquiring scientific minds. It was a fabulous day, the children learnt so much and had a lot of fun.

Agnes - I thought all the buildings were beautiful and loved using the scientific equipment.

Tolu - I enjoyed chemistry and using the bunsen burner to make different colours.

Sherilyn - My favourite part of the day was our chemistry lesson, lighting the bunsen burner and making different colours.

Yana - I really enjoyed making a rollercoaster in Physics, it was so cool seeing if the marble could get to the end and how friction works.  Biology and Chemistry were so much fun as we saw an explosion and looked through microscopes.  I'll definitely be taking my 11+

Elodie - I liked biology, it was great fun using the microscopes to look so closely at all the different kinds of cells there were, in the water on the slides.

Nicola - I enjoyed watching all of the rollercoasters being tested at the end of the Physics lesson.
