Year 5's persuasive writing!

Our recent English unit has been an epic adventure, starting with diving into the world of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The students were instantly hooked on the tales of demigods, monsters, and the mysterious training ground known as Camp Half-Blood. Reading the novel provided a rich, exciting context that fuelled their final writing project.

The main focus of this unit was persuasive writing. The goal was to create a travel brochure for Camp Half-Blood designed to convince demigod teenagers to pack their bags and enroll!

The children became marketing experts, mastering several key techniques:

  • Catchy Slogans: They brainstormed brilliant taglines like "Don't just read the myths, live them!" and "Your destiny awaits!" to immediately grab the reader's attention.

  • Emotive Adjectives: To make the camp sound irresistible, they chose powerful, feeling-evoking words, describing the experience as "thrilling," "unforgettable," and "absolutely essential."

  • Modal Verbs: The students used modal verbs like 'must,' 'should,' and 'will' to strengthen their persuasive commands and suggestions. For example: "You must claim your godly parentage!" or "The archery lessons will perfect your aim!"

A crucial part of the task was understanding the audience. Year 5 recognised that they weren't writing for their parents or teachers; they were addressing teenagers.

They adjusted their tone and language to be more direct, exciting, and relatable to this age group. They included details they knew would appeal to a young demigod—like high-energy activities, the chance to meet new friends, and the ultimate safety from mythological monsters.

Well done Year 5!
