Observing growth and Making bug hotels - Year 2

⚘🐛 'Live and Let Live' is the IPC topic for Year 2 this Spring half term.

It's been the perfect opportunity to see things in action, developing their understanding of life cycles, food chains and how animals adapt to different habitats.

This week Year 2 have planted poppy and pansy seeds and will make regular observations in order to track the changes from seed to flower in real-time.







Last week the children were enthusiastic and excited to design their own bug hotels! They used their knowledge of materials and thought about what bugs would want - a safe shelter! This week, using as many natural or recycled materials as possible, they used (and adapted) their plans to make their hotel. It has been brilliant to watch their curiosity and creativity whilst putting many skills into action:

  • decision making - choosing appropriate and available materials
  • resilience and problem-solving - finding ways to overcome challenges when things don't go to plan.
  • collaboration - helping peers and offering support to others
  • sharing and reciprocity - thinking about the needs of others (both friends and bugs!)
  • service and kindness - considering the impact of our actions on our environment and the responsibility we have to take care of our world.
  • making observations - this key scientific skill can be transferred as the children learn about different processes.

Bawdsey Day 2

Today has been another action-packed day here at Bawdsey, with the children up bright and early, full of energy and excitement for what lay ahead. After a hearty hot breakfast to fuel the morning, the first activities kicked off: canoeing and Survivor (a fantastic session of den building and outdoor skills). The children embraced the challenge, showing great teamwork and creativity as they constructed their shelters and took to the water with enthusiasm. Following a tasty lunch, the afternoon brought even more thrills with the giant swing — a definite favourite! There were plenty of cheers (and a few nervous giggles) as each child took their turn. We rounded off the day’s activities with a problem-solving session, where teamwork, communication, and thinking outside the box were the keys to success.
