Road safety in Year 5

This morning Year 5 had a wonderful workshop with Anita.

During the workshop the children learned about The Green Cross code. We were able to discuss how we can be a safe pedestrian as many of the children are now gaining independence and may begin to be walking to and from school independently.

We looked at some scenarios in depth and discussed how we would behave in these situations.

‘You shouldn’t cross the road at a corner or at the top of a hill, the cars that are coming can’t see you.’ Aurora

‘It’s important to not be talking to people as you cross the road so your full concentration is on the road,’ Kachi

After the whole class workshop the children were given the opportunity to go out in small groups to put their learning into action. They learned about wearing brighter colours in the dark and looking for spots they could safely cross the road.

'You should never walk straight out between two cars; always look right and left.' - Dom

'I learnt that I have to look and listen out for cars and to wear bright clothes so drivers can see me.' -Joe

All the children are coming home with a goodybag including a pencil, sticker, chatterbox template and a reflective drawstring bag!
