Celebrating David Attenborough in Year 1

🌿 Celebrating David Attenborough in Year 1

(Marking his 100th Birthday!)

Over the past two weeks, Year 1 have been completely immersed in the wonderful world of Sir David Attenborough as part of our English learning. Using Little People, Big Dreams: David Attenborough as our focus text, the children have explored his life, his love of nature, and the incredible work he has done to protect our planet.

It has been a joy watching the children learn about someone who has inspired millions of people — young and old — to care for the natural world.

🌍 Learning All About David Attenborough

Through pictures, discussions, and simple research, the children have discovered:

  • Who David Attenborough is

  • Why he is such an important figure

  • How he has helped us understand animals and their habitats

  • Why looking after our planet matters

They have been practising their reading, writing, and speaking skills by creating fact files, writing sentences, and sharing what they have learned with their friends.

🎨 Paper Plate Animal Habitats

On Friday, the classroom was buzzing with creativity as the children designed their own animal habitats using paper plates. Each child chose an animal and then created a miniature world to show where it lives.

We saw:

  • Arctic scenes with polar bears

  • Rainforests full of bright colours

  • Desert habitats with camels and cacti

  • Woodland scenes with foxes and owls

The children were so proud of their work — and rightly so. Their habitats showed real understanding of how different animals live and what they need to survive.

🐞 Our David Attenborough Bug Hotel

Inspired by David’s passion for protecting wildlife, Year 1 have also begun building a large Bug Hotel in the outdoor area. This will become a safe, cosy home for insects such as ladybirds, beetles, woodlice, and solitary bees.

The children have been collecting natural materials, sorting sticks and pinecones, and helping to design the different “rooms” of the hotel. Construction will continue next week, and we can’t wait to see the finished result — a real legacy project for our Year 1 nature explorers.

πŸŽ‰ Why We Celebrated His 100th Birthday

Marking David Attenborough’s 100th birthday has given the children a meaningful reason to learn about someone who has changed the way we see the world. It has helped them understand:

  • The importance of caring for animals

  • How we can protect nature

  • That even small actions can make a big difference

Most importantly, it has sparked curiosity — the very thing David Attenborough has encouraged throughout his life.

πŸ’š A Big Well Done to Year 1

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, creativity, and care the children have shown throughout this mini‑topic. Their knowledge, artwork, and teamwork have been fantastic.

We hope you enjoy seeing their habitats, hearing about their learning, and watching the Bug Hotel come to life over the next week.
