Taking Our First Steps in Year 1 Maths!
To make sure no numbers were skipped or counted twice, we practiced 1:1 correspondence. This simply means touching or moving exactly one object every time you say one number word aloud.
When children count quickly, their mouths often move faster than their hands! We practiced slowing down into a steady rhythm.
For the very first time, the children worked with a maths partner! Working in pairs helped them practice taking turns, checking each other's work, and talking about how they got their answers.
To finish off each turn, we used a special sentence to help lock the final total into their minds:
"The last number I said was
____, so my total is____."
'I can count out 3 red cubes and 4 green ones.' Gideon
'I know that 4 and 1 makes 5.' - Ethan
Try it at home! Ask your child to fetch you 7 spoons from the drawer or 5 Lego bricks from the box, encouraging them to touch each item as they count and finish with their magic sentence!
